Which Galaxy S4 Variant Are You?

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 has been a huge success for the Korean manufacturer, with the handset selling better during its first month on sale than any other smartphone in the Galaxy S range. Thanks to this triumph, the Galaxy S4 family has been expanded to host a variety of spin-offs to suit all kinds of consumer.

The S4 trio comprises of the tough and durable Galaxy S4 Active, the budget-busting Galaxy S4 Mini, and the camera-centric Galaxy S4 Zoom. But how do they differ from the original flagship? Here we take a look to help you decide which Galaxy S4 variant is the one for you.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active

  • 1.9GHz quad-core processor
  • 5-inch Full HD TFT LCD display
  • 16GB internal memory
  • 2GB RAM
  • 8 megapixel camera
  • 2 megapixel front-facing camera
  • Android Jelly Bean OS

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active looks to be one of the most powerful and rugged handsets to date, which doesn’t sacrifice features and design for toughness. Officially announced last week, the device has a lot of things in common with its S4 counterpart, such as a 5-inch display and 1.9GHz processor.

A notable difference between the two comes from the fully sealed body of the S4 Active. With IP67 protection and glove technology, the handset is protected from dust and can be immersed in water up to one meter deep for 30 minutes without any ill effects, making it the perfect mobile companion for those who love the outdoors.

In terms of design, the S4 Active delivers a metallic finish and an industrial-looking style with visible bolts at every corner of the back panel. The capacitive softkeys usually found below the display have been replaced with physical buttons and the sensitivity of the screen has been increased for use with gloves. The volume rocker, microUSB port and headphone jack are also all water resistant.

The camera, which at 8 megapixels is a slight downgrade from the S4’s 13 megapixel offering, does have an advantage over the flagship thanks to a new function by the name of, ‘Aqua Mode’, which allows it to capture clear underwater shots – ideal for scuba diving fanatics.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

  • 1.7GHz dual-core processor
  • 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display
  • 8GB internal storage
  • 2GB RAM
  • 8 megapixel camera
  • 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera
  • Android Jelly Bean OS

Acting as a smaller and cheaper version of the company’s flagship, the Galaxy S4 Mini is a compact handset packed with elements from the leading device in an affordable package, giving potential consumers on a budget the chance to sample the S4 experience.

Running Android 4.2.2 with Samsung’s latest TouchWiz UI skinned on top, the S4 Mini also has a slightly larger 4.3-inch display than that of its predecessor, the S III Mini. The camera is again a step down from the S4’s 13 megapixels, but the Mini’s 8 megapixel lens is still more than capable of capturing great photos in most settings.

The S4 Mini is available in two versions, a 3G-enbaled device with 1GB of RAM and a 4G LTE model with 2GB of RAM. It also houses plenty of features first introduced on the flagship such as S Health; a range of new apps designed to track calorie intake and exercise regimes, to name but a few. Also on board is free messaging via ChatOn and media sharing service Group Play, which turns the device into a Wi-FI access point to connect other enabled handsets together to share content.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom

  • 1.5GHz dual-core processor
  • 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display
  • 8GB internal memory
  • 16 megapixel full optical camera
  • 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera
  • 1080p video capture
  • Android Jelly Bean OS

Reaching new heights in the camera phone market, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is more of a compact camera than a traditional smartphone. Officially unveiled on 12 June, the handset houses a 16 megapixel lens with 10x optical zoom, making it perfect for budding photographers.

Showcasing features such as Samsung’s Zoom Ring, users can rotate the lens to zoom in and out as well as access the gallery and even launch the camera app during a call. There is also Motion Capture and Xenon flash which gives extra light in darker settings, along with the Optical Image Stabiliser (OIS) to ensure images are free from distortion and blur.

Similar to the S4 Mini, the Zoom has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 4.3-inch qHD display. The handset also runs Android 4.2.2 with the firm’s TouchWiz UI laid on top, combining the functionality of a camera with an impressive mid-range handset.

Verdict

The S4 Active is a must-have for those who have a rough-and-ready lifestyle, while the S4 Mini is a brilliant device for those who can’t quite stretch to the flagship. The S4 Zoom is certainly a niche offering but is a great option for lovers of photography.

This extended S4 family gives consumers new and interesting options to choose from, and with a wealth of Samsung Galaxy S4 deals available it has to be said that there is definitely a Galaxy S4 variant for everyone.
